Using OCBC Visa in South Africa

Currency rates by XE

For the first trip ever, I didn't withdraw cash and used my Visa debit card exclusively whilst on holiday in South Africa. However I have to trust "the system" and see what rates were used retroactively, since there is no way AFAIK to see the rates in advance!

Sidenote: I was never asked for my PIN whilst in South Africa, despite IIUC them having chip and pin capable devices. Only had to sign for transactions. Little scary.

I painstakingly logged in and downloaded the CSV and then proceeded to clean the CSV up to join lines and filter only the South African Rand (ZAR) purchases.

Next time to write a program to parse the CSV for the currency values and run a calculation.

Which results in the following output:

I am not sure how to pull up the rates on the day for a side by side comparison. Currency APIs seem severely limited or just expensive.

Wish my bank could show this calculation for me in their user interface. Guess I should count my blessings that I am able to do a CSV download.

I wonder what those S, C, N, K letters mean.

Are there any tools to make this easier? Do please let me know.
