UK BBC Radio 5 live World cup coverage

Broadcasting Status: Offline

ogg123 http://222.106.128.198:8000/5live.ogg

Windows users, you’re going to have to plug in that URL into VLC.

I’ve been working on breaking BBC‘s geographical censorship of World Cup coverage. I think I’ve managed it.

Please take some time to complain to the BBC (like I have) about UK only World cup broadcasting. I don’t necessarily blame the BBC, I blame FIFA‘s greed. “Region locking” World cup coverage is simply not on.

If you hear nothing from the stream, that horrible proprietary realplayer software has stalled and it is unlikely it will restart unless I’m around. Good luck.

You can also use WinAmp to play your feed as well.

Thanks for doing this.

hey, found this on Digg, Canadian living in the US, and stuck with the horrid ESPN coverage. this is awesome! I’m on a mac, and VLC works great for me! Go England!
Comment by jefdiesel 2006-06-17

Thanks a lot for setting this up. I have a question, the Live5 stream is almost 2 minutes behind being live. I was hoping to listen to the Live5 commentary while watching on non-English language TV channels. :-(

Best regards, Roy

Comment by Roy Culley 2006-06-19

I’ve noticed the delays too. :/

If I had more time, I would setup a PVR system and delay the video to match the stream.

Comment by hendry 2006-06-19
Thanks so much for this! Stuck at work and can’t watch the game. Really prefer the BBC coverage, though I’m the the US. :)
Comment by dijares 2006-06-19

Yeah…Thanks a lot! This is great…..at least potentially. Does anyone else have the problem that the 5live stream doesn’t run at normal speed? I have a DVD recorder so the 2 minute delay is no problem but once I’ve synced the audio stream with the pictures from my TV in Japan, it goes out of sync again. Everyone’s voice sounds deep and slowed down. Any ideas why or how to fix this? I’ve tried both VLC and WinAmp with no joy. Thanks for your efforts this far though. Great work.

Up the En-ger-land! Kendalbren.

Comment by kendalbren 2006-06-20
Hey, question…tomorrow there will be two live shows going on at once. Are you able to have links to both?
Comment by dijares 2006-06-20

dijares: I’m just doing UK 5live. It’s upto them.

kendalbren: As I don’t have a TV I can’t determine if this is Realplayer’s or OGG‘s fault. If there is some setting for my icecast2 server I’d gladly apply it.

The trouble with these sort of streams are that they are cached to ensure “continuous” playback. I don’t think it will ever quite compare with FM and what have you.

Comment by hendry 2006-06-20
I don’t know who you are but you are a genius!! I am sitting in an office in California listening to a live football match instead of some lame announcement from the BBC about contractural obligations!
Comment by David, Los Angeles 2006-06-21
Thanks for this great service!
Comment by Football Fan 2006-06-21

OGG stream too slow?

kendalbren: I have the same problem. Seems like the OGG stream is too slow… i have tried VLC and stream through XBOX media player… no luck. I have to keep pressing pause on my DVR to keep in sync with the TV broadcast (ESPN in USA) ...

any ideas anybody?

great work! BCC commentary so much better than ESPN!!

Comment by Marcel 2006-06-21

Many many thanks for this! If you are ever in Scandinavia, I’ll buy you a beer :)

Sorry for being an idiot but…do I just need to copy and paste the url above into the “open network stream” bit of vlc? I’m hoping to listen to the Italy-Czech Republic game. Cheers
Comment by Dan 2006-06-22

Dan: That sounds right.

I am unsure if 5live will cover that game. Check back here closer to the time. I\‘ll only setup then.

Comment by hendry 2006-06-22

Comment by Aaron 2006-06-23
Great stuff. Thanks for setting that up.
Comment by Niall 2006-06-23
You are a superb! Was trying to get it to work myself. Thanks so much! Now all I need is a hard disk recorder to pause live TV here in Sweden to sync it all together.
Comment by mole 2006-06-24
Thank god I don’t need to listen to ESPN anymore. THANKS!!!!
Comment by crabtrp 2006-06-25
Great work, listening and watching TV in Japan, bit of time lag but prevents me getting overexcited. Thanks
Comment by squeezy 2006-06-26
Great, thanks!
Comment by jt 2006-06-27

If you have time lag issues, use a HDD or DVD-based Recorder (with chase playback) to delay video playback by about 50 seconds and then fine tune to sync up. Works liek a chram once you get it working! Thanks ;-)

The speed issue I mentioned above seems to have been sorted out. Great work, fella! Whatever you did, keep doing it! After spending literally hours trying to get round this problem, I am extremely grateful. I’ve no idea how you did it but I’m so happy you did! Cheers!

Up the En-ger-land! Kendalbren.

Thanks for this.

Everyone take a moment to mail the BBC and tell them to A) unlock the region, and B) stream in open formats!

Thanks.

THIS IS MY OFFICIAL COMPLAINT TO THE BBC TODAY !

PLEASE EVERYBODY TAKE YOUR TIME TO DO THE SAME THING…...

YOU CAN COMPLAIN BY CLICKING HERE

http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-perl/complaints

i have repeatedly tried to listen to live commentry on radio5 live via internet but i keep getting this stupid message saying that i can only listen if im in the uk ! if i was in the uk i wouldnt be listening to the match i would be watching it on Sky ! But you cannot get Sky in Greece ! ( if you do it is illegal ) so please help us x- pats abroad & lift the copyright on the matches ? at the end of the day music is copyrighted ! and is widely available on the net ! ( legally & illegally ) so why not a pay scheme to listen at home like Sky ? at the end of the day its a commentary its not music losing thousands of pounds of business ? the match only happens once & then its history ?? thankyou for taking your time to listen & hopefully act on this ? johnnie boy! discofrenzy@hotmail.com living in Greece i look forward to a reply ? thanks

the only other way is if you have a satellite receiver on astra 28 degrees east you can get the stream from there then re-stream it on the net with a fast connection with only about 1 second delay ? ( but this would be illegal !)

im looking around now for a cheap 2nd hand dvb box for myself just for the stream

if i succeed i will post again here with details of the stream…...

johnnie boy! ( or if someone else has the equipment to do it let me know on this board! )
