Is this for real?

I am definitely closing my Facebook account. Just desperately trying to figure out how to keep in contact with my friends.

I guess if friends want to find me, they will just search for my name “Kai Hendry”. If they can’t figure that out, then… do I want to be friends with them? ;)

Using my preferred email environment lately has been really painful.

  • Losing connection to my courier IMAP server at dreamhost (perhaps blame the wireless) and having to restart mutt
  • vim hanging after a save (see the screenshot)

Does this affect other people? Any tips? My configs can be found in my $HOME

Otherwise I have to use freakin’ gmail and cope with its problems.

Spam on Gmail

Suddenly everyday for the last couple of weeks I’ve had to manually report more than 10 pieces of spam a day. Today my spam folder is almost 4000 mails for the month.

I reported the problem as ticket #74303023 and received a painfully generic response:

Thank you for your message.

The Gmail system considers a number of factors when classifying messages
as ‘Spam.’ To best protect our users, we can’t share specific details
about our spam filters.

Providing you with a spam-free inbox is very important to us, so we’re
continuously working to improve our filtering system. To help with this
process, we ask that you report any unsolicited messages you receive in
your inbox. To do so, check the box next to the unwanted mail and click
‘Report Spam.’ If you decide an email is spam after it has been opened,
simply click ‘Report Spam’ along the top of the message.

We appreciate your help in keeping your inbox free from spam. When you
report unwanted messages, you send valuable data to help our spam filters
eliminate unwanted email.

Sincerely,

The Google Team

One of the key features for using Gmail for me is the spam filtering. Now I can’t argue Gmail’s spam filtering is any good.

Since Freenode has been compromised my nickserv password might be too. Unless they had the good sense to hash the passwords, which isn’t common.

So after checking my 121 line long vim encrypted “accounts” file, I noticed that this particular weak password is used in 17 other systems. Woops.

You know what be good? Web standards in regards to user accounts. Now I have to fiddle with umpteen annoyingly different systems to change my password. Pain and suffering. It would be far better is I could do this task with a CLI tool or some handy trusted Web application that would implement such a standard.

Though would such a standard make it easier for “crackers” to script attacks to change your password and really screw you over?

Actually after thinking about it, the best option would just be to reset the password via email. Though that process can be sniffed… If the cracker tried to change your email address too, the user management system should send you an email to the old address to confirm the change. If the user management system had any doubt, it should just send you email a link to proceed.

Btw, I’ve made the move to the OFTC IRC network. I also found lilo‘s “money badgering” a bit too annoying.
